Shaft Sinkers signs ground-breaking Union agreement - 2 April 2007

In a ground-breaking development, Shaft Sinkers and the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) signed a Recognition Agreement in February 2007. In terms of the agreement, Shaft Sinkers formally recognises NUM as the sole bargaining representative of all employees of the company who are NUM members.

More importantly, Shaft Sinkers MD Jannie Hooman notes that the recognition agreement will govern and regulate the relationship between the company, NUM and the workers employed by Shaft Sinkers who are paid up members of NUM.

The day was a celebration for both parties, as the agreement confirms Shaft Sinkers' commitment to its employees. NUM President, Mr Senzeni Zokwana explained that the agreement is significant because it will bring Shaft Sinkers' mining and shaft sinking teams together and ensure that all employees of Shaft Sinkers are represented equally.

"I believe that the signing is a culmination of a number of meetings between NUM and management at Shaft Sinkers. The agreement is a result of the formalisation of the relationship between Shaft Sinkers and NUM, with the hope that it will develop into a working relationship based on respect and trust," Zokwana maintains.

Hooman says that Shaft Sinkers' employees are the company’s largest and most important assets. The company's employees give Shaft Sinkers its competitive edge, and the signing of the agreement with NUM is one of the many steps that Shaft Sinkers has taken to improve the lives of its employees, and to further embark on its transformation mission.
