METS awarded with Owner's Engineer contract - 11 September 2006

Mining and Engineering Technical Services (METS), which is a division of the Shaft Sinkers Group of companies, was recently chosen as the Owners Engineer for the Konkola Deep Mining Project, Package B, in Zambia, by Konkola Copper Mines Plc, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources Plc, UK.

Divisional Manager JJ Durand explains that METS will be responsible for managing the construction of the project on behalf of the owners. The contractor for the project, which primarily involves the sinking of two vent shafts, slyping of an existing shaft from 5 m to 7,4 m, deepening of an existing shaft by some 600 m, is NFC, a Chinese company.

Durand says that METS will be supplying Konkola with a full design critique, and will be managing the construction, quality and safety aspects of the project with a staff compliment of six people.

The design for the project was completed by the contractor in China, and METS has been contracted to critique all the designs, make comment and offer redesign should it not comply to minimum design criteria and safety standards, as required by local Zambian mining regulations.

The design critique is currently underway, with the expected construction completion date set for approximately 15 months.

He says that METS is expanding and now includes a Mine Planning Department, making use of Surpac software to service the Shaft Sinkers group of companies and the mining industry as a whole.

Shaft Sinkers identified a need in it organization and the industry for a mine planning service. The new department will offer Shaft Sinkers' clients the opportunity of viewing their mine planning designs through detailed 3D graphic solutions. The department will add to Shaft Sinker’s competitiveness in the market and will grow as the industry demands it.

METS is active internationally and has been involved in operations in South Africa, North and South America, Australia, Europe and Africa. All METS services are available world-wide, and an extensive, cross section of clientele around the globe enable METS to incorporate the most up-to-date methods into its designs.

Durand concludes by adding that the METS division is striving to grow the top echelon of its team to include more Project Managers, Mechanical/Electrical, Structural Engineers and Surpac mine planners.

METS' capabilities in Engineering Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) are well documented and are areas where continued success is expected.
